A friend of mine from Jamaica has just created a new website dedicated to the Toyota Starlet. This is a pretty in depth site featuring tuning tips and ideas, chassis tuning, videos, photos and much more. Here is what the creator has to say;

Well guys and girls, the EP82 is now sold to a decent, genuine guy which i'm glad about, he had some small plans for it so I wished him the best of luck with it and hope he looks after it.

I've now ordered my new car from Japan yet again but I've decided to try out a different car manufacturer, this time I'll be tuning a Honda Civic SIR-II EG6, obviously I'll be blogging all the progress as I go through the different stages of tuning and taking plenty of photographs yet again :). The return to standard | Part 2

Well this will most likely be the last post on this blog I'm sad to announce. The EP82 is now as standard as it will ever get. I've just put the car up for sale on the Starlet forums and on some other auto trade websites so we'll see how long it takes before she finds a new home. I took some pictures the other day for the advertisement so I'll upload these on here so you guys can take a look at how completely different it looks now, its quite shocking really but I still think it looks rather clean.

For anyone who looked at this blog, even if occasionally, thanks for looking at it and I hope it gave you some ideas and inspiration for tuning your own Starlets or any other type of car for that matter.

Well its been over two years now since I started this blog and its pretty much nearing the end sadly. I decided a few weeks ago that I would be selling my EP82 along with all the parts I've installed. Rather than selling the car as a whole I decided to strip off all the parts and sell them separate and sell the car as a standard car like when I bought it. I've taken a few pictures of the car and parts that I've been stripping off so the car looks a bit strange now but its a good reference to see how different it looks.

I'll take a few more shots later on so you guys can get an idea how many parts I installed on my EP82.

Bee-R Power Builder

After feeling a bit experimental I decided to order the Bee-R Rev Limiter Misfiring System to help with my launches and for when the road surface is wet and the wheels decide to spin out of control causing the car to hit the factory rev limiter. The item works extremely well as you can wire it up to the handbrake light so that when the handbrake is initiated the rev limit you have set will come in and you can launch from the desired RPM by simply letting off the handbrake and releasing the clutch. Then there is a basic rev limiter which you can set to any RPM you desire before the factory rev limiter, which is useful for high powered FWD cars suffering vicious wheel spin. Below are a couple of videos testing it out, quite a lot of fun I have to admit.

Harewood Hillclimb

As you know from last year I like to attend the Hill climb at least once a year at Harewood. This year it couldn't have been a better day, the sun was beating down all day long and there was no wind whatsoever it was a scorcher. Here are some pictures of all the cars that entered that day. What I love about the hill climb is the variety of vehicles that attend, it just makes the day that bit more special as you get a whole range of different sounds and lap times. Also the cars vary in age hugely, its awesome to see that the older cars can actually be just as fast as the newest cars of today which is a great site to witness.

Little update today, unfortunately about 2 weeks ago my gearbox decided to break and leave me stranded in Otley at about 1am on a Friday night which turned out to be fun. The car wasn't driveable so I had to get it towed to my local garage which took another week. The gearbox got diagnosed as properly broken so I located a Glanza gearbox to swap it with, the Glanza gearbox has apparently been sat unused for about 1 year so I was a little sceptical about it but the gear shift was very smooth and no crunching noises. I took the car for a test drive to found out that it made some rather nasty grinding sounds while in gear, I have been told this could be down the the bearings on the differential being worn so it looks like i'll have to replace these before its back to normal.

On a good note though the Glanza gearbox has slightly different ratio's to the C52 gearbox found in the EP82 cars. Due to the Glanza's extra weight 3rd and 4th gears are much shorter and geared towards acceleration which is actually brilliant in the lightweight EP82 chassis, at least I think it is. The car fly's up hills and changing from 2nd to 3rd whilst cornering keeps it in the perfect range for the turbo to fully boost.

Once I got the car home I decided I install some random part I had lying around in my drawers. Its a set of LED lights to replace the nasty looking yellow fog lights that were once there. PIAA make some kool light upgrades and I've seen these on a few other cars in the past such as the J's Racing S2000 which I thought looked Kakkoi.

Hey guys, some of you are probably wondering why there is an Audi A6 on my drive with huge 20" Kahn wheels on. Basically i've worked for Project Kahn for about a year now and being a brother to a younger sister going to a prom and wanting to look good in front of her friends she wanted a nice car to go in, so I went straight to my boss and just asked him straight if he had a car I could use for the evening, happily he offered me his Audi A6 Project Kahn conversion. Obviously I wasn't going to turn this down generous offer and so I decided to wash it and take a few pictures for my blog so you guys can see what I do for a living.

The car features 20" Kahn RSX Diamond Edition wheels, Kahn lowering springs, Kahn Aluminium Exhaust Tips, Privacy Glass all round, 10000k HID's and has been remapped to produce an extra 30HP from the 2.0TDI engine. Its not for everyone but I think it looks much better over the standard version.

Well then, I got round to getting the Greddy E-manage unit wired up and fitted, a big thanks to Nick Jones who helped wire all the harnesses into the Field One Extension harness and do a grand job of it. He even pulled all the wires through the glove box which enabled me to install the main unit hidden away in the glove box compartment. Once all this had been installed I was booked in at The Racing Line in Halifax on the 25th April at 10.30pm for a mapping session on the dyno. As I arrived Matthew the main guy at TRL was in the midst of mapping the new Evo X which looked fucking awesome seeing as it was the first one I'd ever seen in the UK. He had installed a cutsom de-cat pipe and he was mapping the car using the stock ECU. He managed to pull a pretty impressive 374HP figure over the stock 300HP which is actually a very good gain.

Then came my turn for a mapping session, we loaded and tied down the EP82 and began connecting up all the necessary monitory sensors and began tuning. I told Matthew to set the boost to 1bar and see what kind of figures we get, I also said its on the stock fuelling set-up except the SARD FPR and its still running the stock CT9. At first I was expecting a figure of around 160hp so once he'd overridden the factor fuel cut and took the car up to 7200rpm it pulled off an impressive 184HP, not bad for its first shoot without any proper mapping. A few more runs saw the power increase slightly hitting 185HP then 187HP. After a few more runs it managed an very impressive figure of 190.4HP which I was more than happy about to say it was on the stock turbo. This concluded the mapping session, I've included a video of one of the runs and some boost testing for your enjoyment.

Continuing on from the last update I've cleaned up the engine bay now to make it more or less spotless as much as I can be arsed anyway. It was the first actual Spring like day today with the sun shining down and making the Final Speed wheels look awesome. I think the engine bay looks gorgeous now with all the new tuning parts in crammed in there. I took a couple of interior shots too so you can see how I've laid out all the electronics. Another major part for project-ep82 arrived a couple of days ago, the GReddy E-Manage ECU, this thing should hopefully bring out the full potential of my set up when I get it mapped in about a months time. I'm just waiting on the other harnesses to arrive now so I can send it off to my friend Nick Jones who will be wiring it all in to the extension harness so I can just plug it straight it without any hassle and have it all ready for the mapping session.

As mentioned in the previous post i was going to be updating the old pillow mounts as they were pretty much shot from having lowering springs and more aggressive damping force from the shocks. Of course i went straight ahead and purchased a set of Cusco Pillow Ball Mounts, not only do they have a ball joint but you can set the camber a whole degree negatively which is useful when cornering hard. For now I've set the camber to -0.7 degree's as this seems to be a sensible angle for now. Once i fitted these the tracking was way out of course so first off i get that reset and now it feels great. You can definitely feel the difference over the stock items straight away, much firmer ride and a better harder turn in feel. The car is well on its way to becoming competitive at the hill climb that I'm planning on entering as mentioned in the previous post.

The GReddy E-manage unit is on its way from Japan, now i just need to buy all the relative harnesses and get all that wired in so i can go for a propper mapping session and get the car nicely tuned. The only thing that i feel is letting the side down is the braking system, so once the e-manage is installed and set up i will be investing in some 3G grooved and drilled discs and upgrading the brake pads to the Mintex 1144 range. Also whilst I'm doing the brakes i plan to install a set of braided s/s APP brake lines for good measure, these are said to make the pedal feel much firmer and a sharper braking experience and thats definitely what is lacking on the GT.

Well now that Stage 3.0 is all done and dusted of the tune i can start to enjoy the car a little more and not be as conservative with my driving trying to keep the mileage down. I've decided to live out my dream of being a race driver and start by applying for the racing license from the MSA so i can eventually enter the Harewood Hillclimb event this summer coming.

I have been reading the regulations in order to enter the hillclimb and all being well my car will be ok to compete in the modified road vehicle class. After looking through the entrants of the past and present i've noticed that there has never been an EP82 GT Turbo competing on the hill so i'm really excited to see people's reactions and thoughts to my car will be.

Now knowing i want to enter this event there's a few more things left to do on the car to do with braking handling and the ECU. The most important and next thing on my list is to sort out the worn Pillow Mounts and also get a mappable ECU so i can fine tune my set up. After some research and chatting to a few other Starlet owners i concluded that the Greddy E-manage is going to be the most cost effective ECU to go for as it is a more than capable ECU for the EP82's requirements. This should arrive in the next month or so then it will be straight off to get wired into the extension loom then obviously for a mapping session. I'm hoping i can hit around 180-190hp running 1 bar boost possibly slighty more as i have a slight spike issue with the waste gate on the CT9 not being very adequate. Keep your eye's peeled and hopefully soon you shall see some more persistent progress from me and the car.

I've decided to add in a new section to hopefully bring in some more interest to the blog. I will be featuring other tuned Starlet's of friends and tuners alike every so often so you can get an idea of the different tuning methods and vast tuning options there is for the Starlet.

This feature is of a EP91 Glanza which belongs to a friend of mine called Gee who lives locally. He bought the car pretty much standard and has been tuning the car for about 3 years now i believe. He's opted to go for the TD04 turbo swap which is a much more capable turbo in terms of boost and power and can also be easily adapted to fit the 4E-FTE, so its a good option for pursuing high power easily. Recently he has fully forged the engine and had extensive internal work done such as re balancing the crank, connecting rods and pistons. Now with all this work done he has increased the boost pressure to a whopping 1.5bar and the car is now producing 275hp at the fly-wheel. Yes yes, finally i have got round to doing something major on the EP82 which would offer substantial performance gains. As for those who have read the previous posts you will know i had made several purchases of engine and electronic tuning products from all over the world. On Monday the 25th Feb i booked the car in at the garage to have a new clutch installed then for the rest of the week i would be using the garage to install all the tuning parts i have bought. It took me just over 3 days to install all the parts which is quite quick considering i had never done anything like this before. It was a great learning curve for me though and luckily the 4E-FTE is quite a simple engine to work on.

I have to say after working on the car all day on my birthday its been well worth it, just the aesthetic of the parts in the engine bay along with the cam cover i painted look amazing. I never managed to take many progression shots whilst i was working on the car as i was really busy fitting all the parts so its more a before and after style set of shots but still worth looking at.

I've talked about installing and how the parts look but now for the performance, i must say that it is awesomely fast now, with the new clutch and many other new replaced worn out parts the whole car feels like new and the torque is also greatly improved. The thing i love the most has to be the noise, it makes so many different sounds that just makes you want to push it hard every time you sit behind the wheel. The turbo spooling with the short intake, the bov fluttering and the exhaust popping at high rpm's, i have recorded a few video's whilst driving around so i'll upload those in a few days time once i've edited them. I have also booked the car in the for a power run on Saturday 8th March so i'll know exactly what i have gained from all the parts. I have an absolute shit load to type but i'll leave it for the next time i post. Cheers for looking.

Just a quick update on some progress made on the engine tuning side of things. Knowing that I'd be installing an fmic i thought it would be a good idea to cut away all the bars on the front bumper to let as much cool air hit it as possible. Also while the front bumper was off a lined up the fmic core to measure for the brackets i would be fabricating later on to ensure that it sits nice and straight and solid.

My new silicone hoses arrived from Forge Motor sport that i will be using for the fmic piping and the new air filter relocation i have planned. I've done a quick mock up of how the turbo and intake piping will fit together but i think the alloy 90 degree bend will need to be cut down slightly to allow the filter to sit nicely behind the front grill.

Another not so important part arrived which was my Xenon LED sidelight's to hopefully match up with the HID kit i had installed a few months back. The crappy yellow coloured sidelight's just don't cut it against the HID's. I love buying the little subtle things the most because they can actually make a car if done right.

Stage 2.5 | Engine Tuning

Its time to get a little more serious now, and by serious i mean time for some engine tuning to gain some more power. These are the first major developments i am taking to create more power from the 1.3 liter 4E-FTE EP82. I've purchased several new performance parts, some from Japan, some from Sri Lanka and some from England. Hopefully with the combination of parts i've chosen and the tuning methods i've already put in place i shold have a pretty fast street setup. The parts i've ordered will increase the boost and offer a much cooler air flow with the introduction of a custom FMIC setup. The new exhaust manifold will increase the gas flow dramatically as the standard manifold has a design flaw which blocks a fair ammount of exhaust gases due to the runners crossing paths and causing a restriction. The manifold is of mild steel construction with a special paint finish to prevent rust and small metal particles hitting the turbo exhaust blades. To monitor and control the boost more accurately i'll be using the GReddy Profec B Spec-II unit which has many many options and ways to tweak the boost to perfection. A new Apexi Intake will be placed inside the front grille using a short 90 degree silicone reducer hose for a short and cool intake route. The new BOV i have from GReddy, the Type-R should make a great noise, this is quite important these days but also this BOV can withstand some extremely high boost so this definately shouldn't have a problem with leakage.

The other parts i have are more for aesthetics such as the oil catch can and the frp reverse scoop, the reverse scoop will also stop water entering the engine bay and damaging the spark leads like the previous problem i had last winter. For now i'm just waiting for the WEPR intercooler piping kit to arrive with a flange pre-welded on for the GReddy BOV valve.

Stage 2.2

Hey guys, its been a while again since i last updated the EP82. I've been busy working full time as usual settling in at my new job. I have managed to purchase many new parts recently and have a few major/minor plans for the EP82. The not so major things i've done are the newly sprayed satin black windscreen wipers and new transmission fluid and new coolant fluid. These are the minor details but they really can make a difference to a project.

Other new purchases include two front tyres as the old Yoko A539's were worn out and i discovered that they don't make them anymore i opted for some Yoko S.Drive tyres instead, these have a symetrical pattern now and are actually better in the wet and dry. I've uprated all the shock absorbers on the car so they match the lowering springs i installed earlier on in the year. They are KYB shocks and they feel fantastic, the car has been transformed because of these, its much firmer and more responsive in the corners. The new suspension feel has also been aided by a Carbing Lower Arm Bar which i bought from RHD Japan, this item actually makes a fairly big difference to the handling characteristics and for £55 its really worth it, just got to watch those speed bumps now. Fueling wise i have installed a SARD RRPFR kit with the gauge as i noticed last time i changed the spark plugs they were very white. I've increased the fuel pressure slighty in hope to compensate for the leaness of the mixture. Since installing it i have noticed a slight increase in power in the mid/top end of the rev range and also having a straight through exhaust system i get a lot of incredibly loud bangs from time to time which is all good fun.

Other big plans i have on the go are a newer CT9a turbine with 40k miles on it which is in perfect condition. I think the current turbo has a crack on the exhaust outlet side so i'm hoping this will rememdy the loss of boost at the top end rev scale. Recently i bought an FMIC core from ebay which is a fair size as i'll be using the ct9 still just with uprated boost so there was no need to get a huge one. I'll be using a universal piping kit too from WEPR so its a good way to create a cheap FMIC kit. Pictures follow this so take a look.

Hello everyone, its been a little while since i've updated the blog again. As far as my EP82 goes its still the same as it was the last time i updated the blog, i've done another photo shoot at a nice new location so i'll upload some of those pics once i've tweaked them from the RAW format as some of them turned out pretty nice.

A whole year has passed since the last JapShow Finale down at Santa Pod, last year was awesome and this year was even better, the drift arena was made larger to the drifting was at a much higher pace and plenty of smoke. The Jap drag cars were also there similar to last year still running 600+ps ranging upto about 1200ps. I was on the TGTT stand this year with a few other members attending, our stand space was located right at the end of the drag strip furthest from anywhere but i still think we made a good impression, thanks to Starlet_Babe for organising it all and sorting the bbq out too, nice one. The show always gets me excited and inspired to get on with my project after seeing some awesome examples of JDM tuning. project-ep82 is no longer for sale people, due to the market being flooded by fresh imports of the ep82 and ep91 prices have totally plummeted and my car is longer worth what i ideally would like for it so i've decidede to keep it and pursue my original plan of turning it into a time attack track car. This might turn out to be a wise decision i don't know yet, stay tuned for updates those of you who follow this website.

As for you who follow this blog there hasn't been very much action recently. This is because I've been thinking hard about my career and other parts of my life that needed sorting out so i have lost sight of where i wanted to take the project. I've been thinking about how far i want to take the project and how much money I'll need to spend to be satisfied with its performance and also seeing if it will all be worth it once finished.

After a long time thinking I've decided that i will take the EP82 off the road for a year and personally rebuild the 4E-FTE engine and add in forged pistons and forged rods, also all the other obvious steps of rebuilding an engine will be undertaken such a lightened crank, polished head, skimmed head etc. In the mean time i will buy another daily driven car, most likely another EP91 the same as my previous Starlet before the EP82.

The main reason for the forging and rebuilding is because i plan on running an Impreza WRX turbo (TD04L) and having the boost pressure set to about 1.2 - 1.4Bar. Not only will the engined need to be forged to handle the higher boost pressure but i plan on raising the rev limit to 8000RPM's to get the full potential out of the larger laggier turbo as the TD04 spool's up a lot later than the CT9a. The total output power should be somewhere around 250hp still using the 4E 1300cc block.

The main reason i am pursuing more power is that i am hoping to be competing in time attacks across various circuits in the North of England and the Midlands. The car will also have extensive suspension modifications such as Coilover suspension and Whiteline Anti-roll bars and a roll cage is essential. Below i will list all the parts that i require to successfully build my project and cross each one off as i complete each stage.

Hello,

Again its another series of shots of the ep82 but this time with a change of scenery. The day was just soo perfect for shooting, the sun was setting and leaving that golden sort of glow. Most of the shots were taken up at Whitby Abbey right at the top of the town, a great place to visit and also some great surrounding roads. Was a great trip down and it was good to hook up with my distant friend Joe who also took a series of shots with his Nikon D70. Hopefully i'll get hold of these and upload them at a later date.

Hey everyone, decided to have a full on clean of the ep today seeing as it was such a lovely day. Spent about 3 1/2 hours cleaning and it came up pretty gleaming it has to be said. My friend had just recently purchased a Clio 16v so i thought it would be a good idea to go for a blast around some of the local country roads. Turned out pretty damn good and i've got a few nice pictures to share with you all, so here you are, enjoy!

Konichiwa, it seems the longer i leave it to create a new post the more mods i get done in between. Its been a busy few months since i last posted on the blog, it have been quite busy too so be ready for lots of pictures, i'll try keep the wording down this time as not many of you have time to read it all.

I'll start off with the new wheel nuts that were bought for my 21st birthday from my girlfriend and sister, they are Muteki nuts in black open ended but they finish off the bronze Final Speed's nicely i think. Also they are locking with the special tool provided which means you don't have a gastly looking locking nut standing out.

The next modification on the cards was the SARD battery relocation kit, i'd been thinking about distributing the weight around the car now, since having it stripped out the rear end sits about 30mm too high. Having the battery in the boot should help out with the soft rear end braking out under heavy braking and entering tight corners. The only down side would be having less weight over the front end for traction but its a good compramise, total balance is the key to a quick car.

The SARD kit came with everything i needed basically, sealed aluminium box and all the fitting's including a new battery tie-down and plugs for the wire's to keep it all sealed and a clear tube to divert the harmful gasses given off by the battery. Not had chance to test it out properly yet but it feels good so far.

Since the rear end was lacking stability i thought it was also time to fix in an upper rear strut brace to link the two pillars together. I always loved Cusco products so i went for the Type-40 brace, after fitting this part and taking it for a spin the car turned in so much sharper and the rear behaved itself really well, i was amazed at how well a strut brace can improve the handling characteristics of a car. This is definately a worth while modification to the EP82 to imrpove the handling.

Ok, now were onto the cosmetic's as it were. I've always wanted clear indicators for my EP82 but these were never standard factory items so i had to find some from an early model EP80 and take out the orange reflector part, this was prooving quite difficult at the time but eventually i got hold of a cheap set and got to work. I think they make the car look at lot cleaner and more luxorious, i also used silver indicator bulbs to add to the effect.

Next on the cards was a set of HID bulbs, i bought a kit of a fellow GT owner and had trouble deciding where and how to mount the ballast boxes, eventually i came up with a solution after moving the battery to the boot i had a lot of space left to play with so it was all go. They bulbs themselves needed a bit of modifying, filing down the clips and removing the rubber seal so it would fit perfectly into the light housing. After connecting them all up which is seriously easy, turned them on and they looked totally amazing, the power of these kits are phenominal, they light up everything and make the car look so much more modern.

Stage 2.0

This has got to be the most fun stage so far i've done on the ep82. The first part of the stage was the new wheels which i picked up from Bristol from another forum member. He had a set of Final Speed Erasers for sale in 15" which is very rare over here so i had to buy them no matter what. They did need some new tyres though which wasn't a problem. I ended up getting some Yokahama A539's in 195/45 profile, i had these on my previous Starlet and were great, a little bumpy but worth the extra handling feel you gain from the low profile. Also had an oil change which is probably overdue, used some Slick 50 treatment which is great stuff to use when doing an oil change. Topped up with 15W 40 Semi Snythetic from Comma and were good to go.

Before i could set out to install the HKS actuator i had to buy a boost gauge to that i could correctly set it up and check that the car was running properly so i could resolve to fuel cut problem, there were so many gauges to chose from but i settled for the Apexi EL meters as they look great and aren't stupidly priced, i went for an electronic gauge along wiht the control unit so i could play about with the settings and have more accuracy in tuning my car, the gauge is in BAR and goes upto 2.0BAR which i won't be needing, haha, but you can set a warning level and check the peek boost point so you can see exactly how must boost your running, great piece of kit and looks great at night.

Next on the list was solving the boost and fuel cut problem i've been having since i installed the custom cat back exhaust. I've had the HKS Actuator sat in my room and the Blitz decat for a long time now, so i thought it was about time to install these parts and hopefully get the boost running at a stable level. I studied the manual for the actuator and set it up accordingly, i aimed it for 0.7 bar and 0.8 to be safe. I also thought putting on the Blitz decat it might make the boost even more unstable due to less back pressure now but it holds it steady and the HKS Actuator is so far the best tool for tuning i've used at my skill level. The car safely boosts upto 0.75 bar with no problem through the whole rev range.

As for the Blitz decat pipe now installed it sounds amazing, you can hear the turbo spool up on lower boost and it must louder too, brings a huge smile to your face especially with a straight through exhaust, it pops and gargles a hell of a lot. The spool up is a little laggier now though but i need to fine tune the actuator for that part i think, no more fuel cut though which is what i was aiming to resolve. Now for the final part of the update, my El' Sport C-Pillar bar arrived a week ago so i got that installed with the help of my buddy Scott as pictured, haha. This part is great, stiffens up the whole back and end give you better turn in and controls the rear a lot more, although when hitting bumps the rear tends to jump a little but i think thats due to there being no weight in there.

The handling has also improved a lot since i installed the wheels too, they only weigh about 5.4kg's each which is crazy. Finally, i did a small photoshoot at one of the local industrial estates, this showcases the wheels nicely and the other features of the cars progress. They look great i think, bronze on white is my favourite style. Enjoy.

Spark plug lead problem

Not updated for a while, the main reason being the car has been off the road for about a month now due a minor problem that ended up being more difficult than it should've been really. I noticed it when driving home one night, the car was spluttering and not boosting up at all, then when i eventually got home the car sounded as though it was running on 3 cylinders.

I investigated the spark plug leads and the plugs only to find a pool of water in the number.2 cylinder. Apparently this is a common problem for the turbo Starlets. I guessed it was something to do with the bad weather we've been having and the location of the TMIC being right over the top the number.2 cylinder letting water drip down and into the rather poor water tight spark plug lead. After drying out the chamber and pulling out the lead and spark plug it was obvious that they were not in good shape. I decided to upgrade the leads rather than stick with the OEM ones simply becuase i heard they are a poor seal which has now been proven on my leads. With it being the Christmas period i had no chance of getting the leads in time for before the new year.

Eventually today the leads arrived, i ordered them next day from Fensport who work extremely efficiently much to my delight. I fitted them along with a new spark plug and warmed up the car so far so good, took it for a spin around the block, boosts up steady and the idle seems to be more stable and slight increase in the response and general pick up. I ordered a set of the Magnecor Red KV85 leads which are designed and used for race cars. Also with the car being off the road for a while i cleaned up the engine bay and the underside of the bonnet as it was totally filthy.

One other small thing, i have the website now printed on the rear windows in the correct font and colouring to match to hopefully get some more interest in the site. Enjoy the pics below and stay tuned for the next update soon.

Time for another update, its been pretty slow this time mainly due to the time of year. Its a pretty dismal time to modify a car really but were hardcore at project-ep82 so we keep on rollin'. Got a few mods done recently, first i got the car lowered since it felt a little unsafe due to it being even lighter since i stripped out the rear interior. So i ordered a set of Ventura -40mm springs to set me on until i can afford a set of Tein Super Streets. I also ordered a full set of new uprated bulbs which you have probably already seen in the guide. i wrote not so long ago.

Another much needed upgrade was the CD/MP3 player, i was starting to really miss my music having only a tape deck and not being able to pick up the FM band due to the Japs not using the same frequencies as us. Lastly i ordered a ZEP Racing grill from http://www.starletgtturbo.co.uk/ which came well packaged and arrived quickly from Japan. Below are a few quick pics of the parts before they were fitted.

So as you can see from the pictures above i have painted the grill and i also thought i would paint the scoop satin black and added a small TRD decal to add to effect of the grill, also the mesh was painted black as chomre/silver seemed to clash with white. The first few pictures you can see the ride height has changed quite drastically, very impressed with the drop on the springs, the back is still quite high in comparison but this is due to it being stripped at the rear. As for the ride and handling its improved slighty, maybe firmer shocks and a few more strut bars and 15" wheels are required for a really responsive turn in feel. I also debadged the GT Turbo logo's on the doors which make it look much smoother now.

Guide | Bulb Fitting

This is the first guide posted on my blog so far so i'll start off with something simple. As many know Japanese cars differ quite a bit from the euro cars in some areas. There are many small differences which are sometimes quite annoying, such as the headlight bulbs for the quadlight ep82.

First of all get the right bulbs, the High Beam and the Driving Lights are both HB3 bulbs. I put a set of Ring Ultra Xenon bulbs in the High Beam and Ring Ice Blue in the Driving Beam to mix it up a little.

When you take out the original bulbs and compare them to the new bulbs you notice that the little clips are different and are required to be filed down to make them fit. The best way to do this is just using a small file and matching it up to the original bulbs, but making sure its fairly accurate otherwise it might disturb the light path from the lense.

The Driving Beam bulbs also need one other modification to fit correctly and thats filing the guiding pins inside where the plug goes. On the original bulb it only has one but on the HB3 it has 2, these need to be also filed totally flat or near enough in order for it to fit correctly, once that is done everything will work fine and you have an extra 5 watts of power now too.

Long time no post huh, got a fair bit of progress done recently, most noticable is that i have a full cat-back exhuast system which was custom built for my car. I got the piping bore increased to 57mm for better flow and the boost has also increased with this so a nice noticable difference in power and an awesome sound to go with it too. I'm really impressed with the work carried out on the exhuast and i got the back box exactly how i wanted it to look too. This isn't a permanent mod as the original stock center pipe had a nasty hole just before the flexi-joint section so it had to be replaced, and with stainless systems coming with a liftime guarantee it seemed my money would be better spent on a custom system this time which has improved the sound, looks and power all at the same time.

The other most noticable mod i've carried out is the stripping of the rear interior, i thought that making the car lighter improves all the characteristics, acceleration, braking, cornering and even fuel consumption. Once i had stripped the interior the noticed the ride height had raised up another inch or so, but the spare wheel and parcel shelf were both extremely heavy so this has made a big difference. With a FRP bonnet and tailgate this car will be extremely lightweight, these are both in the pipeline aswell as replacing the doors with the n/a non-electric model to save even more weight. So lightening the weight of a car is proven to improve all the above mentioned characteristics, it felt amazing driving it in the cold with the new exhuast and no rear interior.

The Next Stage

After noticing the ride height and the structure of the car is obviously in need of support its time to order a coilover kit, i've been looking at TEIN's and TRD coilover kits, so hopefully a set of them will be on order along with a full set of Cusco front, rear and possibly lower strut braces. I've also been looking into the possibility of getting a C-Pillar bar custom made for the ep82, the company makes them for the ep91 so i need to confirm they fit or can be manufactured for the ep82. Jap Show Final | 08/10/06

Yet again another show, this time it was the Jap Pro Shootout final. I'd been looking forward to this event since May time when i was last down at Santa Pod. I had to wake up at about 4.30am just to meet GeeUK in Huddersfield, so i didn't even bother going to sleep haha. The convoy down to Pod was a good laugh though, we had about seven Starlets and a couple of other random cars like a Nismo 350Z and a Celica GT-4.

When we first arrived at Santa Pod there were so many Japanese cars to look at, infact there was too many to even. I couldn't believe how many cars actually turned up, i had no chance of photographing them all so i just stuck to the cars that really stood out to me, i think my personal favourite cars were the black S13 Silvia with flared arches, and the JZX90 Chaser. There was also a drifting demo arena which had quite a lot of action going on all day long with free ride alongs and a demo from the Steer From the Rear boys too. The pics below are of the show cars and the drifting demo arena.

Ok, the final part to this post is the Pro Shootout cars, i got a few shots of the cars on the strip and in the gallery aswell, this is what i came down to see, the Norris Designs Evo, and the other cars were insanely fast. I just loved the noise and the smell of all the cars, its one of those experience where you have to actually be there, but i have the next best thing in the form of photograph's.

I saw a Skyline GT-R do an 8.8 sec quater mile at about 185mph which is absolutley crazy. The other cars such as the Envy Supra and CRD Supra were also amazing to watch, this was a totally awseome day its got to be said. Same time next year for definate i'm there. Enjoy the final pics.

Down at Donny Cruise, i haven't been to this for a couple of years since i had my ep91 and met up with a fellow ep91 owner. Last time i went was also my first time down there, it was quite a shock really to see so many modified cars down there, especially ones that have been featured in magazines. This time i had trouble finding the location because i convoyed with a local last time, i had to drive round Doncaster center hoping to find another cruiser then just tail him in hope he was going to the location.

When i arrived i parked next to another ep82, the owner was a lass, so i chatted to her for a while, was quite interesting to meet a lady owner of a GT Turbo, i always picture girls driving the Glanza as it looks more girly. I also met up with Si and a few other Starlet owners while i was down there, was talking to Si and checking out his engine bay, he has a wicked set up at the moment, he's still running on the stock ct9 with uprated boost but he has all the neccessary mods to ensure it all runs right. The other Starlets i saw down there also looked just as nice, other Jap cars down there were the usual Evo's and Impreza's, a few Pulsar's and Civic's. As usual i've uploaded a few pictures for you guys to look at, i only mainly took shots of the Jap cars and a few other of the best cars. Some of the shots were taken by my friend Stimu1us with his crazy Nikon D70 so credit to him for those. The pics i took are quite poor due to the lighting and the fact i didn't take my tripod so i didn't look like a reporter for Max Power, haha.

Update, done a few more things on the ep82 today. One of the first things i planned on doing was taking a cold air feed pipe up through the arch and up into the engine bay just behind the right hand headlight as there was a huge hole with a bung inside. I took that out got my air feed and fixed it under the front bumper. All i need now is my splitter from SRB Power and it will be nicely hidden. I then got a stainless pipe made up to relocate the filter behind the headlight so its directly inline with the cold air feed. I used a set of silicone hoses, 60mm and 63mm to fix the Apexi Power Intake to the original EFI piping.

The next part of my work was a few little smaller detailing. I purchased a few TRD items such a decals and a TRD Gear Knob. I fitted these today and am quite impressed at how they look. At the moment my project is taking small steps with little details that will hopefully catch people's eyes and not be so obvious straight away.

I also managed to fully clean the whole car aswell so its time to share a few quick snaps of the current state, it was a nice sunny day so the lighting was much better and it brings out the best in the colour and paintwork. Hopefully when i get my coilovers and my new lightweight rims i'll do a proper photoshoot in a nice location to bring out the best of the car.

Japfest II | 30/09/06

Went down to Donington Circuit today to check out what Japfest II had to offer. Was looking promising weather wise so that was a bonus. Was really quite impressed even just after parking up on the grass, there were so many nice looking JDM rides sitting around. It got even better when i discovered the paddock area with hundreds or tuned Japanese motors. Most impressive were the Evo's, no doubt. Although there were a large number of them, they were all tuned in their own unique way. The time attack's on the track were a good spectacle too, also seeing the D1UK cars was a new experience for me, it was really good to see some real drifting for a change, great sound!.

When i got there i noticed a white EP82 that i recognised from the forum as Tanya's EP82, last time i had read it was pushing 200hp, then later on in the garage i came across it and to my amazement it is now pushing 290hp at the fly, that is one crazy Starlet. I've uploaded most of the pics i took so just sit back and enjoy the cream of the crop. Peace.

Hey people, i haven't done an update for a little while, had a few things done on the car. Firstly i got the waxoyled on the underside, being a Japanese import and over there they don't use any salt on the roads all the mechanics, bolts and brackets had no sign of rust whatsoever so getting it waxoyled seemed a good idea. It looks like brand new underneath now, amazing really. The other new modification is the Apexi Power Intake i fitted, this made quite a big difference to the throttle response and also the noise is just awesome. I fitted my HKS SSQV and my cooling panel this afternoon after cleaning the engine bay out, got to say its a totally amazing sound, a short chirp, love it. It looks great in the engine bay aswell, can't say i notice and performance gains or losses as i heard it can spoil the spool up time but seems good so far. Next stage will be updating the driving bulbs and getting a relocation pipe for my Apexi Power Intake. Stay tuned. Enjoy the pics.

Here she is then, the first set of pictures that i've managed to take after spending about 6 hours cleaning the whole car top to bottom. I'll take some better pics of it when i get round to taking it somewhere pretty. As for now hope you guys like it, i'm really pleased with the way the car picks up so fast. After inspecting the underside of the car i was amazed that the rear beam has no rust and is still painted gloss black. Another great reason for buying from Japan i suppose.

First Impressions | GT Turbo

Well after my long but comfy train journey up into Edinburgh and after wondering around the beaufitul city and checking out what it has to offer i picked up my Starlet GT Turbo. It has definately been worth the wait, after first looking at the car and thinking to myself i can't belive i actually own one of these JDM little beasts i started inspecting it all and checking out all the features. I was soo impressed and its in really good condition too. I couldn't wait to take it on the road, after filling up at the nearest Shell petrol station and filling up on Optimax it was time for the driving impression.

"Whooooaaaaa" I put my foot down in 2nd gear and the turbo just threw me back into my seat i was totally amazed and addicted at the same time, i don't think i'll ever forget that feeling of driving a turbo charged car for the first time. Its a totally amazing experience and i can't wait to drive it properly once i have the right chasis tuning finished. The first stage will be posted up in the next fews days once i have cleaned and inspected the car so expect to see plenty of pictures and some How 2's and guides. Peace!

Just been speaking to Steve over at Avanti, he's now fitting a speedo convertor which will lift the speed limit of 113mph and convert the reading into miles instead of a new clock face. Also just got through the post my cooling/slam panel in andonised red. Looks really nice and should do its job of keeping it kool and looking fresh, plus with some nice stickers and a link to this website printed on there it should look the part. Car is almost here now, arriving in the docks on the 19th July, should be ready for collection the following week.

Well its sad to say that i've just sold my first Starlet, my N/A powered EP91. Pretty upset its gone really as i've had it for 2 years now and spent a lot of time and effort on it, suppose its time to move on though and i'll forget about it within a few hours once my GT arrives haha. Some more pics of my GT Turbo waiting to be shipped over, the ship departs Japan on the 15th June and it should arrive in Newcastle on the 23rd of July all being well.

Looking at the engine it needs a good clean but apart from that the rest looks really tidy, and the steering wheel is a different shape to normal, looks more like the one on my EP91 at the moment. Can't wait now not long at all.

Today my Apexi Power Intake and my HKS Super SQV arrived, well not arrived i had to pick them up from Parcel Force. I got ripped off with customs though as they charged me double on Import VAT the bastards, i'll be ringing customs soon and sorting this out as i'm missing £50 there. As for the packaging and time taken its been really fast and they were well packed. I took some pics below on macro so you guys can check them out. Both items come with a fitting kit and diagrams which is fairly helpful for those of who don't speak Japanese.

After getting more and more excited about the ep82 arriving soon i've gone and ordered one of those HyperRev books from http://www.funkystyling.com.

At the time i didn't realise they were all written in Japanese, i looked on the official site of the books and read the following quote which put me at ease, "Although HyperRev is produced only in Japanese, most brands and product specifications can be read and understood in English. Needless to say, the full color pictures speak for themselves". This is no problem really as i'm looking at starting to learn Japanese anyway, it will just be a good source of inspiration for me when tuning my ep82.

Ok now knowing that my GT will be soon on its way its time to buy some parts from http://japanparts.com.

After reading through various articles on many websites i have concluded that the HKS SSQV BOV has the best sound and performance. The best site for information on most products for the 4E-FTE is http://hardcore.ep91.com, this site has loads of useful information and trial and error reports on various product and basic info on what they do and pro's and con's for different tuning products.

The kit that i bought comes with a kitting git for the 4E-FTE and for £160 its a real bargain. Another item i bought is an Apexi Power Intake. After having one of these on my old 4E-FE the differance was amazing when i fitted it, especially in winter time.

Success, i officially own a Starlet GT Turbo now. The bid was successful and the GT is now mine. Hopefully all the details will be sorted by next week and it will be on its way over on a ship from Japan within the next 8-10 weeks. It feels good to own a turbo car now just a case of waiting from now on. You know what they say "patience is a virtue".

Here we go then, i've been looking at the Japanese auctions for a few weeks now waiting for the right ep82 to come along, its been a while but i think this is the one. From what i can see its totally standard except the aftermarket alloys which are no problem.

From here hopefully i will win this car in the auctions after getting the auction sheet translated into English and it has a good history of service and no accidents. Fingers crossed then i can start buying all the early stage parts when i know its mine. Hopefully after winning the car in the auction it will be here within 8-10 weeks so time for a pint of Guiness i guess.

Santa Pod | Starlet Meet

Well i went down to Santa Pod at the weekend 13/05/06 and it was awesome. Met a few EP82 owners in Bradford then convoyed down with them then met another EP82 and a Glanza in Doncaster. Got quite a few shots from the meet and on the track. Our man from Bradford in his 5E-FTE conversion managed a 14.5 secs quater mile one of the fastest on the day.

It was great to see so many Starlets all in one place and it gave me some awesome ideas for when i eventually get my EP82. Overall it was awesome to see what the Starlets could do but i think they can do better, hopefully next time there will be some faster ones.

Ok well here is my blog for my project ep82. For those who are unaware the ep82 is a Toyota Starlet GT Turbo import available from Japan. I currently own an ep91 n/a Starlet which i've had for two years and have found it logical to go for the ep82. I'm hoping to create a very nice and clean example which will also go as fast as it looks.

I have currently put a deposit down to enable me to bid in the japanese auctions and bring over my own ep82 which will then commence the project. www.avantimotorcompany.com. I'm going for a white 95 Quad light version totally standard in hope to start from scratch and make a nicely tuned Starlet.
